COVID-19 Update 12/2/20
Sea Base submitted its first COVID-19 Mitigation Plan to local and state authorities mid-March 2020. Since that time Sea Base has continually updated its plan based upon current information from the Center for Disease Control, Florida Department of Health, Monroe County Department of Health, Monroe County BOCC, local EMS, and US Virgin Islands Health Department.
Operating at partial capacity in 2020, serving more than 6,000 individuals, Sea Base had no confirmed cases of COVID-19 among staff, captains, participants, or contractors.
Sea Base will operate in 2021 at full capacity in accordance with its COVID-19 Mitigation Plan and local and state authorities. This plan includes changes to program and facility operations, sanitation, housing, food service, and staffing.
On November 10, the National Office of the Boy Scouts of America announced a one-time COVID-19 surcharge for registrations attending BSA National High Adventure Bases including Northern Tier, Philmont Scout Ranch, Sea Base, and Summit Bechtel Reserve:
“Due to the circumstances surrounding COVID-19, the BSA is notifying all registrants scheduled to attend one of the national High-Adventure bases of a one-time COVID-19 surcharge fee of $50 per participant. This fee will offset the additional costs associated with operating High-Adventure Bases in accordance with CDC, state and local guidelines and precautionary measures intended to keep all participants safe.
This surcharge is necessary because the additional expenses associated with addressing COVID-19 were not accounted for when the 2021 High-Adventure Base fees were set 12-18 months ago.”
Given the above directive and need to fund a safe and successful program for all, each Sea Base Crews fees will be increased by $50 per person. Thank you for understanding the need to provide the safest program possible.
Sea Base will include the fee in the final payment invoice for Crews.
No. Sea Base does not have the authority to waive the fee for an individual or Crew.
COVID-19 was not an issue at the time Sea Base set fees or opened 2021 reservations.
The fee will offset the additional costs associated with operating in accordance with CDC, Florida State, and local guidelines. This includes costs associated with:
- Pre-trip preparations
- Screening procedures for staff, captains, and participants
- Short-term housing units for some programs/staff
- Short and long-term structural changes to dormitories and buildings
- Food service protocols with an increased reliance on disposables
- Sanitation supplies and equipment
- Changes to staffing levels to accommodate sanitation requirements
Yes. Sea Base cannot waive the fee for any individual or crew.
It is very unlikely that Sea Base will be closed due to COVID-19. If Sea Base does close, every effort to reschedule your crew to an acceptable date later 2021 or 2022 will be made. If Sea Base is unable to reschedule your unit, a full refund will be provided.
Please notify Sea Base immediately if your unit intends to cancel. Early notification may allow Sea Base to rebook your canceled adventure. If Sea Base rebooks the adventure, all fees except for the original $250 reservation fee will be returned to your unit. Sea Base will not refund any fees to your unit if the adventure is not rebooked. Sea Base does not refund crews for canceled flights or ground transportation. Sea Base strongly recommends trip insurance.
Sea Base is offering each crew participant a Sea Base branded facial covering included as part of this surcharge. Crews will receive this upon check-in for their adventures. We also recommend that participants purchase a second “buff” or “gaiter” style facial covering as a backup and for UV protection.
